Electric vehicles could be the way of the future, but there are many people with hesitations about switching from fossil fuels to electric.
One of the biggest concerns people have is the range that electric vehicles can go between charges. After all, no one wants to be driving and run out of power or have to park and charge for hours at a grocery store.
With fossil fuel-powered vehicles, drivers can simply stop at a gas station to fill up as needed, but with battery-powered cars, charging isn’t quite as accessible – yet.
While charging stations are becoming more prominent across the United States, there may be another solution in the works.
According to WCPO, engineers with Purdue University are partnering with the Indiana Department of Transportation to create the world’s first wireless charging highway.
If all goes as planned, the highway will charge electric vehicles as they drive, similar to how a cell phone can charge on a wireless charger.
As WCPO reports, the roads would work by having electrical coils embedded inside of them. The coils would deliver contactless power to vehicles via magnetic fields. A transmitter would send energy up from the coils to a receiving core in the driving vehicle and it would charge in that way.
“At this power level, it’s very different than that little pad that you put your phone on. But it’s the exact same idea. The whole idea is if you can charge your car on the road while in motion, then you’re basically riding for free. You know, you’re not spending any energy while you’re going down the road,” said Aaron Brovont of Purdue University, as reported by WCPO.
The project has received funding from the National Science Foundation, which hopes to accelerate the growth and expansion of the electric vehicle market and reduce consumer anxiety about the charge life of an electric vehicle’s battery.
Engineers are working to install a test strip of the road next year for practical testing.Whizzco
