Watch A Venus Fly Trap Attempt To Devour A Slug

When you think of plants, you probably think of the pretty house plants that brighten your space with a burst of green. Most are relatively easy to take care of and don’t require a whole lot of work besides the basic watering and sunshine.

In turn, they not only provide your home with that pop of color, but they also are aesthetically pleasing to look at, and many of them have health benefits as well like filtering the air for us.

But there is one house plant that is something of an enigma to people: the Venus flytrap.

Unlike other plants that live on water and sunshine alone, the Venus flytrap is actually a carnivorous plant. The name is something of a giveaway. But unless you own one, you’ve probably never seen one of these plants in action.

So, what exactly does a Venus flytrap look like when it’s clamping down on potential prey? Well, now thanks to the internet, thousands of people online got to see some rather creepy footage of a Venus flytrap attempting to swallow up a whole slug.

The slug proved to be a fighter and was not going to go down without a fight. The video of the Venus Flytrap trying to eat a slug was caught on camera and then posted to the TikTok page @interestingplant.

The video shows a slug gliding its way up the plant, completely unaware of the danger that he is in. The Venus flytrap’s two leafy “jaws” are sat open, just waiting for an unsuspecting insect to come along so it can shut. As soon as the slug slithers onto the open space, the plant’s leaves begin to slam shut.

It looks like it’s going to be lights out for the slug, only the bug puts up a fight. It struggles against the closing “jaws” of the plant and after a few seconds, it starts to push through the top of the leaves. Determined, the slug continues to wriggle and snake its body out of the grasp of the flytrap until it manages to make a full escape and get out from the inside of the plant.

The entire video went viral, with the clip amassing many comments from people who called it “concerning” or “distressing.” One person even wrote, “Didn’t think feeling sad about a slug was going to be in the cards today.” Meanwhile, someone else commented, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything escape a Venus fly trap!”

To clarify a little bit of the mystery that is the Venus flytrap, the National Wildlife Foundation shared that the plant has “hair-like projections” known as trichomes within its inner surface. These trichomes are what allow it to close down on any insect prey that comes in contact with it. However, in order for the plant to not waste its energy opening and closing, the trap will only close when the trichomes are triggered multiple times.

Interesting facts to know about such a fascinating plant! Hopefully this little slug doesn’t go near the Venus flytrap again.
