The Javelina (Collared Peccary)

Collared peccaries, also called javelinas, are found in the spectacular Sky Islands. They travel in herds and usually weigh between 35 to 60 pounds. With their pronounced snout and bristled hair, javelinas are often compared to wild pigs; however, they are not pigs (or rodents!), but part of the tayassuidae family. They can be found as far south as Argentina, and all the way up through Arizona, which is a fantastic range — in fact, one of the greatest latitudinal ranges of a game animal. As of now they are only found in three states, but they are still expanding northward.
