Scuba Diver Gets Surprise Hug From A Giant Octopus

There’s something special about octopi that most people don’t realize. Since they have eight arms, they can give four simultaneous hugs!

As it turns out, that little joke may not be very far from the truth. Andrea Humphreys has something to say on the subject, and she is familiar with those eight-legged sea creatures.

Humphreys has completed over 675 dives during her 12 years of going under the water. Through all of them, she has had many experiences but in one particular case, she had an encounter that was what she referred to as an “experience of a lifetime.”

She was in British Columbia near the Campbell River when an octopus came up and surprised her in an incredible way. Fortunately, they were able to capture it in pictures so that we can all enjoy it.

Humphries was swimming with some other divers when the octopus was seen floating out in the ocean. They tried to avoid the octopus so as to not disturb it, but the octopus had other ideas. It got “up close and personal” with the divers and then it happened.

The octopus came up and gave her the biggest hug. According to Vancouver Island, she said: “Its tentacles were reaching through the camera to feel my face and then at some point, it had crawled on my body, on my hips, and was giving me a hug.”

Humphries shared a POV video of the encounter on Instagram:

Since she was wearing a diving suit, her entire body was covered except for her mouth. One of the tentacles reached up and touched her lips, sucking on them and showing what seemed to be affection.

All in all, the octopus was there for about 40 minutes and it was very curious about the camera and mask she was holding and wearing. She described the octopus as being larger than a basketball but she had no fear of it. You can even hear her excited sounds underwater in the video.

This isn’t something that happens very often. For the most part, an octopus will hide in the rocks and will not come out. To see one is a real treat but to be hugged by one is an unusual and unexpected event.
