Whether or not you live in the midwest, you’ve likely heard chilling tales of #snowpocalypse2019 and the Polar Vortex. This weather phenomenon has been mercilessly freezing areas between the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes.

It’s cold. Colder than most people are prepared for.

According to Mother Jones, at least 187 million Americans are affected by the polar vortex, many of them at risk of overexposure to the harsh elements.

Ricky Castro, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Illinois, told viewers that this winter’s weather could “possibly be history-making,” while governors in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Alabama, and Mississippi have announced states of emergency.

As Bustle reports, for 14 straight hours, Minneapolis experienced -50 degrees or below.

“We’re not exactly surprised that the records fell since this week was forecast well,” Allan Curtis, an NWS meteorologist in Des Moines, told the Des Moines Register. “I think what takes a lot of people by surprise is the fact that we haven’t had this kind of cold in 22 years or more, since 1996 or, before that, 1965.”

Winter has hit hard all over the Midwest. Six states have even registered temperatures lower than those found in Antarctica, and here’s proof.
