It turns out, plants aren’t the thoughtless, incommunicado carbon-dioxide-breathers that many of us thought they were. They do breathe in what we breathe out, but they also use an elaborate system of communication to transmit messages to each other — both above ground through a multitude of chemicals and scents, and below ground, likely through their intertwining roots.
