Tied To A Tree In The Blistering Heat, This Elephant Was Barely Alive When Her Life Was ChangedMatthew Russell
When a 55-year-old veteran of the logging industry was in trouble, it took the help of some dedicated rescuers many miles north of her to bring the help she desperately needed.
Tied to a tree in the blistering sun, Phang Duan wouldn’t have lasted long were it not for the brave workers, and several of them, in fact.
She is an elephant, after all.
Rescuers from the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary traveled from their facility in Thailand to Lanta Island, where they found Phang Duan in poor shape, One Green Planet reports.
According to sanctuary founder Khun Montree, she was underweight, dehydrated and suffering from an infection, a victim of years of heavy labor.
Phang Duan was forced to work in the logging industry of South Thailand before being employed as a banana seller on the streets of Krabi.
“All of this changed for the 55 year old gentle giant as her chains finally came off and she embarked on a last journey from Lanta to Phuket,” the Phuket Animal Sanctuary posted to FacebookAfter 5 hours by ferry and truck she arrived safely. Her new name is Sai Tong, and her new home the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary.
The incredible rescue is all thanks to Khun Amy Bushell, who first noticed Phang and alerted the sanctuary. Her future looking brighter, Sai Tong is now enjoying a life of less work and much more play.
