Since the COVID-19 pandemic caused a worldwide lockdown, more and more people turned to at-home hobbies, like gardening and caring for indoor houseplants, to pass the time. It’s a soothing activity that brings many people joy, and one of the neatest things about it is getting to watch the tiny seeds grow into beautiful plants.
The process of growing can almost feel like magic. One day, the plant is tiny or even in the dirt still, and within a matter of days or weeks, it can completely transform.
The same is true not just of plants, but of fungi as well. The way it quickly grows and transforms is so incredible, but it can be hard to see that change happen with our bare eyes.
One photographer named Jens Heidler wanted to capture the process of fungi growing and she did just that. Over the course of 20 days, she used macro timelapse photography to record the transformation of mushrooms growing from single blocks of spores into matured caps.

Some of the varieties she recorded include Shiitake, Lion’s Mane, and King Oyster mushrooms.
