Imagine discovering a new species. You’re the first person to see it. To even know that it exists. To look at it and wonder what kind of vital clues it could offer to help us gain a better understanding of the world around us. Then imagine it disappears. It isn’t seen again in your lifetime or for hundreds of years.
That’s exactly what happened in the case of some of the animals in the quiz below. Others were well-established and had their population decimated by habitat loss. One of the animals featured nearly went extinct after it was hit particularly hard by chytrid fungus, a fact that could offer valuable insight into a species’ ability to rebound.
And hope is not lost. Global Wildlife Conservation has teamed up with over 100 scientists to establish a list of species of plants and animals that are “missing,” as in they could still be out there, waiting to be rediscovered. From there, artist Alexis Rockman rendered 25 of these species in beautiful watercolor to help launch this exciting search for the “25 Most Wanted.”
Challenge yourself by seeing how much you know about these elusive species, and enjoy the lovely artwork along the way!
