A small lake in the remote forest of Hokkaido Island in Japan became a worldwide sensation after people discovered it’s shaped like a perfect heart.
Lake Toyoni appears like any other lake from the ground. It’s beautiful and serene, tucked into a forested area.
However, from the ground, you’d never know just how extraordinary this freshwater lake truly is.
The lake gained popularity after being featured in a Japanese commercial. The commercial footage used a drone to capture an ariel view of the lake, which revealed its unique heart shape. Once people realized the lake was actually heart-shaped and not photoshopped, it became an instant hit.
Lake Toyoni used to be known as Kamuito, which loosely translated to, “A Marsh Where God Lives.” Getting an ariel view of the place may just give a reason for such a powerful name.

Many photographers have flocked to the area to catch a shot of the stunning hear lake. What makes it even more special is that it’s a protected area, so it’s home to a lot of wild animals and natural beauty.
If you’d like to see the lake from above but don’t care to visit on ground-level, there are helicopter tours that take guests over the lake for a glimpse at its ariel beauty.
Much of the world is still under lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic, but things are slowly starting to open again and travel may in the near future. Lake Toyoni may just be a place to visit.
