Three Amazing Amazonian Monkeys

2012_Match_BrownHowlerMonkey_03_rcd11052012 3. The howler monkey, which is the Amazon’s largest primate, is also the earth’s loudest land animal. Howler monkeys use their over-sized vocal cords to belt out their signature “howl,” which can be heard up to three miles (4.8 km) away and allows them to communicate with other howler troops and to establish their territory.

Hear the red howler’s distinctly loud, baritone call — watch the video.

Like all fauna in the Amazon, these primates are in danger of losing their habitat to deforestation and climate change. Celebrate Earth Day and donate to protect Mother Earth and the many species of primates, birds, amphibians, and exotic plants that call the Amazon rainforest home.
