The Grand Canyon. It’s one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and if you’ve seen it in person, seen pictures of it, or even just know a little bit about it, it’s not hard to understand why. Located in Arizona (whose slogan, incidentally, is “The Grand Canyon State”), the canyon is an impressive mile deep, 277 miles long, and 18 miles wide.

Calling it “grand” might be an understatement when you consider we’re talking about 1,904 square miles. That means the Grand Canyon covers more square miles than Rhode Island, which only covers an area of 1,212 square miles!

The area is so large that there is even a town that resides within it, albeit a small one. At the base of the canyon, within the Havasupai Indian Reservation, lies Supai Village.

Only 208 people live in the small village and visitors can’t access it by road.

Each year, nearly 4.5 million people visit the Grand Canyon. Many people make the journey to hike its many trails while others come to simply enjoy its stunning beauty.

However, the canyon is more than just a pretty face. It also has a rich and mysterious geological history that’s equally awe-inspiring.

In fact, there is still so much scientists don’t know about this 1.5 billion-year-old landscape.
