Five Amazing Avians that Call the Sky Islands Home

Military Macaw

Miltary MacawThe Military Macaw is a threatened species of parrot that can be found only in certain forests of Sonora, Mexico, and South America. In the Sky Islands of central Sonora lives the largest subspecies of Military Macaw, who can grow up to 31 inches long and whose life span is 60 years in the wild. These birds are incredibly intelligent and social. They live in large flocks of up to 60 and always fly next to their mate, with whom they mate for life.

Worldwide, their numbers have dropped to less than 10,000 individuals, and that number is decreasing every year—mainly due to habitat destruction at the hands of logging and ranching interests, but also due to capture and sale on the exotic pet trade market. The only way to truly protect this magnificent bird is to protect its habitat.

You have the opportunity to preserve the habitat of these incredible birds by donating to our Gift That Gives More dedicated to saving 32,000 acres (50 square miles) of Sonora’s Sky Islands. Learn more about the initiative and donate now.
