Five Amazing Avians that Call the Sky Islands HomeKatherine A. Thichava
Broad billed Hummingbird
The metallic-green sheen of the broad-billed hummingbird makes it an eye-catching addition to the Sky Islands. Feeding on the nectar from flowers and flowering trees, this little guy needs to consume around 1.6 to 1.7 times its body weight in nectar each day. It visits Arizona in the summer months, but a separate population lives in Mexico all year round.
More than half of this striking bird’s body length is made up of its blue and white tail feathers. Add in its impressive crest, and the Black-Throated Magpie Jay is one fine-looking bird. It prefers to live in pairs or small groups in the woodlands of the Pacific Slope of Mexico.
