Female Dragonflies Fake Being Dead To Avoid Males
Some women will make up almost any excuse to avoid getting close to men but it seems as if dragonflies may outplay all of them. Those creatures will play dead in order to protect themselves from predators.
Not only will they play dead, but they have also mastered the technique and are very convincing when doing it.
The story comes from New Scientists and it confirms that it is common for female dragonflies to take part in this practice. When threatened, they fall to the ground and fake their own death.
Experts from the Ecological Society of America did the study to confirm that it is actually true. 31 dragonflies were observed and in 27 of the cases, the practice worked for the females. It did not work for the other four dragonflies, who were still found attractive by the male insects.
The lead researcher from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, Rassim Khelifa, was shocked to discover that the male dragonflies flew away and then the females came back to life once they left.
It seems as if this may be more than a personal choice. Mating is painful for the female moorland hawker dragonflies because it damages their reproductive system.
Khelifa is an expert on the subject and he has been studying dragonflies for over 10 years. That being said, it’s the first time he has seen any type of behavior similar to this.
