17. Black-tailed Jack Rabbit, 35 mph

These desert dwellers have the need for speed… literally. From coyotes and mountain lions to owls and snakes, the desert is full of predators that would happily look to this speedy little guy for their next meal. Not only are black-tailed jack rabbits super fast, they can leap up to 15 feet at a time!

And while they don’t need a lot of water to thrive in the harsh desert conditions, they do require a lot of food for all that hopping around–they can eat as much as a large cow in a single day. That’s crazy!

16. Greyhound, 45 mph

It may not come as a huge surprise that greyhounds are fast. After all, they were bred to be quick on their feet. With their long legs, slim builds, and impressive lung capacity, these dogs were built to run.

But not only are greyhounds fast, they can reach their top speed in just six strides!

15. Elk, 45 mph

Elk are definitely not the fastest animals on our list, but they get points for being surprising. Given their size and build (they’re one of the largest species of deer), you probably wouldn’t expect them to be as fast as they are.

However, elk can reach speeds of 45 mph in short bursts and can run at 25 mph for long periods of time when the occasion calls for it.
