Watch Giant Elephants Smash Giant Pumpkins

Let’s be honest. The best part of this time of year is the pumpkins. The brightly colored gourds are everywhere, from our home decorations to our food, there is no escaping the season of the pumpkin. And to be honest, pumpkins are a great snack for this time of year.

Whether you’re enjoying them in the form of a latte, a pastry, or something else, pumpkins are a great snack. Apparently, it’s not just us humans who think so. There are some animals who also enjoy snacking on the orange gourds. That’s why we will sometimes find our jack-o-lanterns nibbled on by critters like squirrels.

But it’s not just small animals who have a taste for pumpkins. Elephants also like to smash and eat the orange treats.

And that is how the annual “Squishing of the Squash” celebration – now on its 23rd year – became a popular thing. Each autumn, the elephants living at the Oregon Zoo get to entertain themselves by squishing pumpkins.

While it might seem entertaining to us to watch these gentle giants squash pumpkins, there is a reason for it. The elephants are simply getting to the soft and tasty flesh on the inside.

The video is quite fun to watch as it’s clear they’re having an awesome time. The large pachyderms use a mix of their trunks and tusks to get the smashing started. Then, they use their huge feet to finish them off. Once the pumpkins have been obliterated, they are able to feast.

As the zoo states about the footage, “Some of the world’s largest land animals demolished some of the area’s largest pumpkins during the Oregon Zoo’s 23rd annual Squishing of the Squash.”
