Motorists Bring Traffic To A Stop On Busy Interstate To Save A Family Of Ducks

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!

That’s how the popular riddle or saying goes, but it seems it applies to ducks as well.

A family of ducks was attempting to cross the road to get to the other side of Interstate 405 in Washington State, but they ended up causing a bit of a traffic halt in the process.

On the morning of July 18, 2022, some motorists spotted the duck family crossing the busy Interstate and made the decision to stop and help out.

While many people might’ve kept driving, some Good Samaritans realized that the ducks likely wouldn’t survive the trek across the Interstate alone and they might even cause a car accident if left to their own devices.

They ended up stopping their vehicles and getting out to assist the ducks, bringing traffic to a screeching halt.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) posted a video on Twitter about the traffic situation, writing:

“Yikes! We have baby ducklings trying to cross northbound I-405 just south of 112th Ave SE in #Newcastle. That’s what is causing this. WA State Patrol is en route.”

They added, “Please drive with extra caution in this area! Expect delays while folks play duck duck goose trying to remove them.”

While it looks like a pretty serious traffic delay, drivers were only set back around 10 minutes when all was said and done.

In the end, WSDOT shared an update that the ducks had made it to safety. They wrote: “The ducks and ducklings are off safely to the right shoulder/work area.”

They also provided an important reminder that “wildlife can appear on any of our roadways, at any time of the day and year. If you spot an animal creating a hazard, slow down and call 911.”
