Mother Nature continues to surprise us with unique weather events.

A spectacular event occurred in the Great Lakes area when freak weather caused the usually placid waters of Lake Michigan to rage like a tempestuous sea. Winds of 50 miles per hour caused 20-foot waves to batter the coast, and public beaches were closed for safety.

While, Lake Michigan has many similar characteristics of an ocean, waves that large are not common. The unsalted water rose to shocking heights before crashing furiously on the pier.

Despite the turbulent water, several people still turned up at the shore to capture this extreme weather event; and for some, the thrill of taking on Mother Nature’s fury is irresistible.

Michigan surfers live for this kind of weather, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart. One big wave at the right (wrong?) time and whoosh! You’re in the lake. But who are we to deny someone the thrill of nature.

Aside from the adventure seekers, many others took in the view from afar.

Either up close or at a distance, the beauty and force of nature on our Great Lakes is something truly incredible.
