Watch For Falling Ice: Ocean-Going Polar Explorers Experience Close Call

When Steve Leonard and Arctic explorer Jason Roberts set out to film polar bears for BBC's Incredible Journeys, they didn't expect to dodge giant chunks of polar ice. The two encounter a process known as “glacial calving,” in which the forward motion of a glacier makes its terminus unstable, causing huge chunks of ice to break off into icebergs. Watch Leonard and Roberts' close encounter of the crushing kind as their small boat briefly loses its engine right near a crumbling glacier.

After seeing their tense adventure, check out the largest glacier calving ever filmed.
