See Why This Alien-Like Sea Creature Has Excited Evolutionary Biologists

It looks like an insect, flies like an insect — but lives in the ocean? The sea butterfly, a kind of sea snail found in the Arctic waters, has been found to have traits very similar to terrestrial insects in a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Using high-speed cameras and lasers, researchers have found that the tiny snail uses the same bio-mechanics to swim in water that a butterfly uses to fly through the air. The sea butterfly has a transparent body and wings, whereas most snails have a “foot.” See it in action below!
