Hippos were first introduced to Colombia by the infamous cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar when he brought in hippos for his private estate and zoo. After his death, some of the hippos escaped and have thrived in their new habitat.
Now, they threaten both the environment and humans who live in the area. Because of how quickly these animals are thriving in the area surrounding the Magdalena River, they are quickly multiplying and posing a significant threat to citizens.
Cornare, the Colombian environmental agency that oversees the management of the hippos, has turned to castration in an attempt to deal with the problem.
