A rare video taken by a Sea Shepherd drone shows two endangered blue whales swimming freely in the Antarctic ocean, side by side. The mother and her young calf were followed by the drone, which launched from the Steve Irwin ship.

Aboard the ship, crew members were excited to watch the blue whales as they swam past. The ship was participating in Operation Icefish — a campaign that hopes to end illegal Antarctic toothfish fishing.

The blue whale has been endangered since 1986. Researchers estimate there are only 1,700 blue whales left in the Antarctic blue whale population.
