How Does One Tree Offer Hope In The Fight Against Hunger?

A delightful combination of form and function come together in the Tree of 40 Fruits, a hybrid plant that includes dozens of varieties of stone fruits, including apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums. You can’t buy one of these trees at the garden center, though, because each tree is the work of Syracuse University art professor Sam Van Aken, who painstakingly grafts branches onto a base tree over several years to achieve this variety. He places the grafts so that the tree blooms throughout the year, producing a bountiful harvest that lasts for several months.

Van Aken, who sees his trees as works of art, has planted 16 of them on the grounds of museums and community centers. Watch this video to learn how the trees can provide food for a community!
