Unlike most bugs we see start to see in spring, Cicadas don’t appear every single year. In fact, they only come out every 10-20 years.
For Brood X cicadas, they decided to emerge from where they were living underground for the first time in 17 years.
Billions of cicadas are making their appearance in the Eastern parts of the United States and they seem to be everywhere. People are sharing photos of the insects online and they’re not for the faint of heart.
In the photos, you can see swarms of the insects as they enter into full-on mating season. While some people are afraid to go outside because there are so many cicadas, it’s nice to know that they’re actually harmless. They don’t bite or sting or release any stinky smells in self-defense. But, they can give some people the heebie-jeebies with how many of them there are.
