Chimpanzees are fascinating animals. Sharing 98% of our DNA, they are our closest living relatives. Take a look a their social networks and it’s not difficult to see the connection. Like humans, their communities tend to be large. They often consist of up to 50 members and even contain multiple family groups.
Look to your own life, think of your co-workers, your neighbors, your friends, and your family. Sounds similar, right?
Like humans, they both make and utilize tools. Most often they use tools to eat and drink. For instance, it’s not uncommon that they’ll use sticks, straw, and blades of grass to snag hard-to-reach insects like termites. They also use stones to crack open nuts and fruits and leaves to soak up drinking water.
There’s no denying these incredible creatures are intelligent. In captivity, some chimpanzees have even been taught basic American Sign Language.
But their intelligence isn’t just about their ability to imitate humans. Often, our behaviors are shockingly similar without learning from us.
Take a look at the video below for an amazing example of just how much like humans chimpanzees can be!Whizzco
