Every year, 100 million animals die gruesome deaths on fur farms. While more and more fashion designers are eliminating fur from their lines – California just made history by becoming the first state to ban new fur products.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill last Friday that will make it illegal to sell, donate or manufacture new fur products. The new bill applies to clothing, handbags, shoes and any other items made with fur. It will go into effect on January 1, 2023.

Gov. Newsom tweeted, “I just signed #AB44 — one of the strongest animal rights laws in US History — making California the first state in the nation to ban new fur sales.”

Laura Friedman, state Assemblymember and co-author of the bill, tweeted, “Today CA made history – #AB44 was signed into law! After decades of efforts from animal welfare advocates, we are now the first state in the nation to ban fur. CA has no place for the inhumane & unsustainable treatment of animals. Now for other states to follow in our legacy.”

The Humane Society of the United States also praised the passing of the historic bill. They posted, “We thank all supporters, and especially Assemblymember Laura Friedman for her compassion, dedication and humane leadership. This is a historic day for animals!”

The day was made even more historic when Gov. Newsom signed multiple other bills to protect animals. One bill prohibited the trophy hunting of bobcats in the state. Another banned the use of elephants, bears & other wild animals in circuses. Yet another that protects horses from slaughter.

He wrote, “The cruel treatment of animals must come to an end.” California continues to lead the way in animal welfare. Hopefully, other states will follow suit.
