With temperatures rising for summer and reaching record highs in some areas, many people are turning to lakes, rivers, and pools to cool off.
Chances are, if you’re feeling the heat, the wild animals in your area are too. That was recently true in Lake Tahoe, CA when a family of black bears joined some swimmers for a dip in the lake.
According to KCRA, Jen Watkins was at Pope Beach with her son when they noticed the mother black bear and her three cubs had come down onto the crowded beach.
She explained to the news outlet that her son first noticed the mama bear when it got in a small fight with a golden retriever. Thankfully, neither the cubs nor the dog were hurt in the altercation.

The bear family continued to come down to the beach throughout the day, splashing in the water amongst human swimmers and even stealing some meat from a picnic cooler.
Onlookers watched as the bears made their way around the beach and played in the water. Jen explained, “We were all a little shocked.”
Speaking with KCRA, Lieutenant Nelson Resendes of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office warned that black bears can “be very dangerous.”
In a video captured by Watkins, you can see many people standing near the bear and her cubs, with one man standing right over the cubs and filming them.
Resendes warned against this kind of behavior, saying, “Don’t feed them, don’t entice them, don’t provoke them and obviously in a setting like this… don’t approach them… Respect their space.”
