An Inside Look At Animals’ Incredible Ability To Detect Things

We already know that nature is pretty amazing, and animals all have their own incredible abilities for survival in the world.

Honestly, given the different abilities that animals have it is no wonder humans are at the bottom of the food chain when we’re out in the wild.

To just highlight how amazing some animals are, BBC Earth put together a video of different animals’ abilities such as their sight, smell, or hearing abilities.

Some of these include a barn owl as it hunts for food, a herd of elephants that can hear sounds humans can’t, the amazing sense of smell that a wolverine possesses, as well as a dog named Max who was able to detect his human’s cancer.

As the video says, “Elephants with incredible hearing, dogs that can detect cancer and silent and stealthy owls – the animal kingdom is full of super-powered creatures.”

But perhaps the most incredible story amongst these stories is that of Max. In fact, thanks to Max, his owner Maureen Burns was able to realize she had breast cancer even before it was confirmed by tests.

As Burns explained in the video, “I thought at the time Max was fading …And I was preparing myself for losing him because he just wasn’t happy. …And the odd signs: he would come up and touch my breast with his nose and back off, so desperately unhappy, with such a sad look in his eyes.”

Maureen had a small lump in her breast but her latest mammogram was clear, so she presumed all was okay. She went on to say, “And one day, I was looking in the mirror in the bedroom here and I looked across in the mirror at Max’s eyes … and I knew it was cancer.”

Maureen went to her local hospital and the results came back negative. It took a surgical biopsy to finally detect the cancer. Maureen had it removed and the change in Max’s behavior was instant.
