Alligator Stops Traffic To Cross The Road In Viral Video

Sometimes, when you’re in a hurry, you cross the street at its closest point instead of the nearest crosswalk. We might call this jaywalking in the US, but many other countries and cultures don’t look as negatively on the practice as Americans. After all, before we had motorized vehicles that could zoom through a street in the blink of an eye, “jaywalking” was the norm!

It’s not unreasonable to expect new technology to adapt to existing behavior, instead of the other way around.

Maybe this was what was going through the mind of a 10-foot alligator that recently stopped traffic in Orlando, Florida. Maybe he was thinking “I’m right, and everyone else here needs to slow down.” Of course, we can’t know for sure. But he was certainly acting like it!

Footage of his casual stroll was spread online, captured by the couple Neto and Mara, who regularly post unusual events that happen behind the wheel for their subscribers on social media.

The video has received hundreds of thousands of views and shows both the gator arriving at the other side unscathed and the many, many inconvenienced drivers that piled up behind each other during his crossing.

Fortunately, it seems like no one was injured and aside from the moment’s inconvenience, there was no harm done.

While unusual, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened in Florida.

In March of 2021, the Port St. Lucie Police Department responded to a traffic jam caused by a gator that measured over 10 feet. He was later safely relocated without incident.

We can’t know why the alligator crossed the road (feel free to make up your own punchline), but what’s important is that he got to the other side!
